Department of Hardware & Networking

  • Networking hardware, sometimes called computer networking devices or network equipment, is the physical hardware needed for device interaction and communication within a computer network. In particular, they act as data mediators within computer networks.
  • Data terminal equipment, or hosts, are devices that generate or are the final receiver of data. Networking devices can be line drivers, switches, hubs, repeaters, routers, gateways, network bridges, modems, wireless access points, networking cables, and hybrid devices like multilayer switches, firewalls, proxy servers, protocol converters, bridge routers, network address translators, multiplexers, network interface controllers, wireless network interface controllers, ISDN terminal adapters, and other related hardware.
  • Copper-based Ethernet adapters, which come installed as standard equipment on most contemporary computer systems, are currently the most widely used type of networking hardware. For portable and handheld devices, in particular, wireless networking is growing in popularity.
  • Data center hardware, such as file servers, database servers, and storage areas, network services, like DNS, DHCP, email, and so on, and content delivery devices are examples of additional networking hardware used in computers.
  • Expanding our perspective, we can also include contemporary coffee makers, PDAs, and cell phones in the category of networking devices. The term “network hardware” will become unclear due to the vastly growing number of “network capable” endpoints as technology progresses and IP-based networks are incorporated into home utilities and building infrastructure.
